Always Dilute! The Best Carrier Oils for Massage

To help protect skin from irritation, and to make application easier, essential oils must be diluted in a fixed vegetal oil, or carrier oil, before applying to the body. For a whole body massage oil, its best to choose carrier oils that will provide plenty of glide and moisturization, yet dont feel overly greasy on the skin. These are top choices for whole body massage oils:

Fractionated Coconut Oil - Organic

Jojoba Oil, Golden - Organic

Marula Oil - Organic

Sunflower Oil - Organic

In formulas for joints and tendons, a small amount of these specialty carriers can be added to enhance your formula:

Black Cumin CO2 - Organic

Tamanu (Foraha) Oil - Organic

How to Dilute Essential Oils for Massage

The appropriate adult dilution for whole body massage is 2% essential oils to 98% carrier oils.

This works out to be about 18 total drops essential oils into every ounce of carrier oil.

If making a blend for adults for specific joints that will only be applied over small areas of the body, such as the hands or knees, the dilution can be 3-5%, or 25-40 drops total essential oils per ounce of carrier oil.

For sensitive individuals and elders, you may need to reduce the total essential oils by half. Here’s a recipe to get you started.

Cooling Joint Rub with Frankincense and Peppermint

Materials:

1 oz. glass bottle with pump

10 ml (2 tsp.) Fractionated Coconut Oil - Organic

15 ml (1 Tbs.) Jojoba Oil, Golden - Organic

5 ml (1 tsp.) Tamanu (Foraha) Oil - Organic

8 drops Lavender France - Organic

8 drops Frankincense CO2, India

8 drops Peppermint, India

6 drops Plai

4 drops Yarrow, Blue Organic (High Chamazulene)

Directions:

Set the 1 oz. bottle on a paper towel to absorb any spills. Add each carrier oil to the bottle, then drop in the essential oils. Twist on the pump top and gently shake to combine.

To Use:

This is a 4% dilution to be applied over a small area of the body, such as knees, feet and ankles, or wrists and hands. Pump a small amount of the blend into your hand and gently massage over the desired area twice daily.

To enjoy this formula as a massage oil for the whole body, reduce all essential oils by half (this will make it a 2% dilution).

Notes of Caution: Always avoid the eye area and mucous membranes when applying. Before using any essential oil, please see all Safety Considerations on the left side of the product page. If you have any medical conditions or are on medication, please consult with your physician before using essential oils. A patch test should be performed before use for those with sensitive skin.

Final Notes for Formulators

Creating a synergy of three or more essential oils is your best bet for a well-rounded aromatic and beneficial experience. For example, combine cooling and warming oils together for a dynamic icy-hot sensation. Or add in a cheerful, uplifting citrus aroma such as Orange, Sweet - Organic or Grapefruit, Pink to create your own unique signature scent.
