Product Overview
Our White Cypress Leaf essential oil has a fresh, crisp, pine-like and citrusy aroma with woody balsamic undertones. While essential oil from the leaves of White Cypress is relatively new, the properties of this Australian native tree and its wood and bark have been studied for over a century. High levels of alpha-pinene (26-49%) and limonene (18-30%) explain the uplifting and refreshing aroma that perfumers and aromatherapists will find intriguing and unique for a middle note and tree oil.
Callitris columellaris, also known as White Cypress Pine, is an evergreen coniferous tree native primarily to coastal Australia and now naturalized in Hawaii and Florida. Australian Aboriginals have traditionally used the leaves and resin of White Cypress to make bodywash and the wood to make torches. While the tree is closely related to Blue Cypress (also C. columellaris, or C. intratropica), known for its blue hued oil distilled from the bark and wood, White Cypress Leaf essential oil has a considerably different aroma and chemical profile. While there is little usage data available as of yet, the combination of limonene and alpha-pinene along with caryophyllene makes for an aroma that is both invigorating and centering and suggests the essential oil would be useful in household cleansing formulations, enlivening diffuser blends, room sprays, and candles.
For aromatherapy and cosmetics, White Cypress Leaf essential oil is a refreshing addition to elevating blends, chest rubs, post-workout bodywash and massage oils, clarifying soaps, and in low dilutions in cleansers and serums for oily and congested skin. The robust aroma is best used sparingly and pairs well with Sandalwood, florals, and citrus oils in perfumery and personal care products.
Our wild harvested White Cypress Leaf essential oil is a by-product of the Australian timber industry. The producer collects leaves and twigs from several different timber mills to distill the essential oil, making the most of the harvest of this tree. The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species has assessed C. columellaris as stable and has it listed as ‘Least Concern.’[1] A wonderful choice for sustainable bodycare!
