Product Overview

Our certified organic Blood Orange essential oil has a sweet, fresh, vibrant, fruity-aldehydic aroma characteristic of sweet orange with a light, mouthwatering tartness that is richer in aroma than Sweet Orange and may be used in similar fashion. The uplifting aroma awakens the senses and brings an air of joyfulness to formulations. Blood Orange is a juicy way to upgrade a familiar favorite in diffusers, massage blends, leg and foot lotions, belly rubs, nighttime sprays, skincare preparations, and cleansers. It lends a lovely, tart, fresh-fruity top note with soft berry undertones to perfumery creations.

Our producer uses organic fruit cultivated around Mount Etna and the turquoise Sicilian seaside. Here, the combination of fertile volcanic soil, the warmth of the sun, and the freshness of the sea provide the perfect growing conditions for fragrant and juicy citrus and grapes. Blood Oranges get their distinctive dark flesh color from the presence of anthocyanins, antioxidant pigments common to many flowers and fruit, but rare in citrus fruits. Anthocyanins, however, are odorless and water-soluble, therefore they do not appear in the essential oil. Nevertheless, the fresh peels of the Blood Orange offer a complex sweetness and fruity-berry quality to the aroma of this citrus oil.

Considering that most citrus peel essential oils contain very high percentages of limonene (up to 95%), one would expect them to have more similar aromas. The fact that Orange, Lemon, Lime and Grapefruit essential oils smell differently due to constituents amounting to less than five percent of the overall oil is fairly comprehensible. The fact that Orange oils of the same species can differ aromatically based on percentages of less than one percent is pretty remarkable.
