Our Eucalyptus By-Absolute is a specialty extract quite different than the typical fresh, camphoric Eucalyptus essential oil. Created for perfumers and formulators, it has a rich, warm, woody-herbaceous, and balsamic aroma with spicy-green and tea-like top notes over deep nuances of hay, tobacco, dried fruit, and black pepper that linger in the tenacious drydown. This ‘By-Absolute’ is produced from the leaves and branches that remain after the steam distillation of Eucalyptus essential oil, resulting in a complex aroma with an unexpected resinous warmth and sweetness.

Utilizing the spent material after steam distillation enables us to make the most of the Eucalyptus harvest and the wealth of aromatic molecules that are too large to pass through steam. First, Eucalyptus leaves and branches are harvested in Spain and distilled for essential oil. Then the remaining plant material is upcycled in a solvent extraction process at our facility in France to yield Eucalyptus By-Absolute. Please note that this is a dark green-brown, moist, paste-like material that requires gentle warming to liquify.

The aroma of Eucalyptus By-Absolute falls into the Agrestic aroma family – alongside Absolutes such as Hay, Tobacco, and Oakmoss – a category known for evoking the scent of bucolic countrysides, sun-warmed meadows, and fresh-turned earth. However, with its rich balsamic qualities it could also be part of the Woody aroma family.

As a middle or base note, Eucalyptus By-Absolute can bring interesting warm, green herbaceous, subtly fruity, hay-like facets to your woody and leather accords, fougère and chypre fragrances, or used as a greener alternative to Tobacco Absolute. Try it in middle accords to enrich green aromas like Clary Sage or Lavender Absolute, or give depth and a hint of peppery spice to florals like Rose. It blends beautifully with most woods such as Sandalwood and Cedarwood and helps ground citruses like Bergamot.
