Product Overview

If ever an aroma could be said to impart a sense of comfort and well-being, our organic Cocoa Absolute surely is one! The luscious, enticing aroma is hard to resist; it is highly recommended for chocolate lovers as the aroma is like that of fine dark chocolate. Cocoa Absolute seems ideally suited for environmental fragrance as well as scenting decadent soaps and candles – and for those who just can’t get enough of that delicious smell! Naturally derived organic ethanol is the only solvent used for extraction (no hexane).

The history of cocoa is fraught with conflict. By means of ruthless and unconscionable acts on indigenous populations, the 15th century Spanish explorer, Christopher Columbus, brought (among many other looted goods) cocoa beans from Central America to Europe where it eventually became highly popular.[1] But chemical analysis of residues found in pottery vessels from Puerto Escondido – what is now Honduras – confirms the usage of cocoa to before 1,000 BCE![2] For centuries the Maya of the Americas have revered cocoa for its considerable properties and have used it in ceremonial and sacred practices. In 1753, the naturalist Linnaeus appropriately dubbed the cocoa tree its botanical name Theobroma cacao – Food of the Gods.

The beans' distinctive aroma is enhanced by roasting, which is the first process carried out in the production of cocoa aromatics. The roasted beans are then pressed to separate the cocoa butter from the powder, which is the aromatic, defatted part used in extraction. Interestingly, there are over 600 volatile aromatic compounds that comprise the heavenly aroma of chocolate. When using Cocoa Absolute, it is impossible to forget the early origins of this universally beloved aroma – one that is deeply rooted in our psyches from one of the most body/soul-nourishing plants on earth.

PLEASE NOTE: Cocoa Absolute contains a small amount of caffeine[3], if highly sensitive or allergic to caffeine, we recommend avoiding this oil. Soluble in alcohol, partially soluble in fixed (vegetal) oils; please see Blending Suggestions.

Naturally derived organic ethanol is the only solvent used for extraction (no hexane).

Sharp

Rating

This is a kick ass strong chocolate scent. However I was hoping for a rich deep warm and buttery soft chocolate aroma. This is a sharp and biting chocolate. Definitely intense and goes a long way, but I would describe it as a cloyingly sweet almost acidic chocolate truffle made with lots of dates and cacao powder with no cacao butter. I want something smooth and creamy and deep and rich and soft. I will try something else, this is my first foray into cacao absolute and certainly like chocolate itself the beans will vary greatly so will anything made with them. I don't like these beans particularly.

Dirty!

Rating

I’m not sure how to feel about this one. Smelled out of the bottle it is rich dark chocolate; not sure if I want to drink it or snuggle up to it. Diluted down to 10% and it becomes very dirty with a strong urine unwashed underwear smell minus the ammonia, but it still has wafts of chocolate beneath. Despite this urine smell I can’t take my nose away; it is dirty but in a very alluring human way. Dare I say sexy?! I haven’t been able to work it into a usable fragrance yet, but I’ve only given it a cursory go. On a blind smell of the 10% dilution and with no prompting, urine was the first descriptor used by three people, with one person liking how it smelled on my hand but grimacing at the sent on a strip. Get a sample and dilute it down to get a feel for it before buying.

Yummy!!

I've recently purchased both Cocoa Absolute Convention and the Cocoa Absolute Organic. I've tried in the past a few Cocoa Absolute but unfortunately, they've always disappointed me. Too bitter without any warmth. Not the case with these ones. Both these Cocoa Absolutes are excellent, but the one who takes the cake is this one: Cocoa Absolute Organic! This is it! It is buttery, it is creamy, it is like the best hot chocolate. I've already repurchased and oh boy, will for sure repurchase it again.

Ylang Ylang, Very Fine Indeed

I sometimes feel like a broken record when asked how to sweeten up a natural perfume blend. My answer about 90% of the time: just a touch of Ylang Ylang.
