Product Overview

Our exquisite Black Currant Bud Absolute has a complex bouquet of intense tangy green and fruity elements, somewhat citrus/minty notes, wine-like earthy undertones and even what some call a tomcat urine-like note. What?! Yes, this amazing absolute, a modifier of many uses, can add a hint of animalic allure when used in trace amounts. This odor is attributed in part to minute amounts of the sulfur compound 4-methoxy-2-methylbutan-2-thiol, reputed to have an olfactory detection threshold of 1 part in 1,000,000 billion![1]  In the book Perfumery – Practice and Principles, authors Calkin and Jellinek state that the use of animalic notes in perfume compositions is of great significance, evoking a sense of pleasure for the perceiver.[2] Author/perfumer Alec Lawless categorizes Black Currant Absolute as a maverick, an oddball "that can make the party!"[3]

Ribes nigrum – native to the British Isles[4] – is cultivated in Northern Europe, particularly in France, Holland, Belgium, and a few other countries in that part of the world. About 300 kilos of Black Currant buds, harvested in December, January and February, yield only 1 kilo of the absolute, an aspect that greatly affects production cost of this material.[5] Extraction takes place in France[6] for the fine perfumery industry, and thankfully for creative use by natural/botanical perfumers.

Although Black Currant Bud Absolute is soluble in alcohol, it is only partially soluble in fixed (carrier) oils.[7] It does impart its aroma to fixed (carrier) oils by gently heating both absolute and carrier oil separately before combining. When cooled, insoluble material will precipitate to the bottom, however the portion remaining will be highly aromatic. Please also see special use instructions to blend.

Cat urine GOODNESS

Rating

So, I was looking to make a few tropical fruit accords. Looking back, I remember that most of them have a subtle "cat pee" scent, and black currant absolute delivers. Someone else mentioned it smells like guava straight out of the bottle, and I wholeheartedly agree. It brought me back to summer at home, with the smell of guavas on the counter wafting through the entire house. This is a MUST for building tropical fruit scents!

From the Oils Room

Rating

Thank you for your feedback CK. We note in our descriptor that Black Currant Bud absolute is used as a modifier in trace amounts, and we suspect that the strong urine smell you experienced may be due to not diluting this material enough. We recommend that you try a dilution of 5 percent or less; this material and a few others, such as Seaweed Absolute, Tobacco Absolute and Violet Leaf Absolute, are meant to be used in trace amounts – that is when their true aromas come forth. Also, please note that if you are aiming for a botanical oil with a predominant ‘berry’ or ‘fruit’ note, there are no true essential oils or absolutes that offer that. One might think that for commercial fragrance oils there are corresponding botanical oils, but that is often not the case.

Dissappointed with this one :(

Rating

Alas, I got none of the wonderful black currant notes I expected - just an overpowering version of the cat-urine note mentioned in the description. I tried it a few different ways - diluted, straight, on the skin, on sample paper, mixed with other scents, and the urine smell was the only thing that came through. Thought it may just be me, so had another person give a sniff test, and they agreed that all they got was "strong pee". Frustrating, since I was really needing something black-currant-reminiscent for a specific scent! Any recommendations?

Juicy, Guava

Rating

I loved this after a few whiffs. It smelled very nice! It has this juiciness and sweetness that reminds me of guavas (guayabas). It reminds me of a cooked guava puree my aunt use to make in Mexico. It is sweet when I first smell it. After a few seconds the fruity smell softens and I get a bit of a boozy kick, in a nice mellow way. I really dig this. I don't get any urine smells from this.
