Product Overview

Our Rose de Mai Concrète has the sweet, beautifully balanced aroma of fresh cut Roses. It lends a beautiful note to solid perfumes, and because of the high percentage of waxes, makes a fragrant and skin softening addition in skincare products.

A Concrète is the material from which an Absolute - the premiere ingredient for natural perfumery - is made. To make Rose Concrète (pronounced con- cret), first the Rose flowers are carefully picked to avoid damaging and bruising the delicate petals. This is very important to retain the scent. Next the flowers are immersed in a solvent (most often hexane) to remove the aromatic oil from the plant material. After the hexane evaporates what remains is a Concrète. Our Rose de Mai Concrète has a near-solid, waxy consistency and is soluble in oil and partially soluble in alcohol.

Concrète contain a rich amount of plant waxes and pigments and can have a consistency anywhere from soft semi-solid to solid hard wax. Although their aroma is less concentrated than an Absolute, they are still highly aromatic, and amazingly tenacious and long-lasting.

I'm glad I ordered just a gram of this because it is quite unpleasant, with that odor of roses that have begun to rot. What I received did not at all match the description. I've had the same problem finding a good rosewater from other vendors - one acknowledged the problem. There seems to be some difficulty in capturing the scent of fresh roses in bloom, and what one often gets is the scent of rotting petals - not at all what you would hope for. Notes from the oil room at EB: Our Rose de Mai Concrete originates from our reputable long-time producer in Egypt. It is important to note that Rose de Mai (Rosa centifolia) can vary depending on country of origin. As a concrete, freshly harvested roses are used and, prepared as an absolute using solvent extraction, are never cooked, burned or allowed to rot. Inexperienced distillers , trying to get a higher yield often “cook” roses beyond their capacity, and a burned or foul-smelling hydrosol is the result. There are many complex notes to all natural rose products, soapy, powdery, watery, etc., that may be desirable or not, depending on your nose. It is customary to dilute the concretes in alcohol or a carrier oil in order to fully perceive the fragrance, which then opens up beautifully and has a rich, warm and full aroma upon dry down - JMF
