Getting to Know Geranium – A Rosy, Green Floral

Few essential oils strike the balance between beauty, versatility, and utility quite like Geranium. Bold, green, rosy-floral, and endlessly adaptable, it’s both a formulator’s ally and a perfumer’s force of nature. Native to South Africa, flowering Geranium was brought to Europe in the 17th century and is now cultivated globally for its remarkably rose-like aroma and wide-ranging benefits.
Often used as an economical substitute for Rose oil, essential oil of ‘Geranium’ and ‘Rose Geranium’ are derived from the same botanical, Pelargonium graveolens (syn. Pelargonium x asperum). The oil is produced from the fragrant, velvety leaves just as the plants begin to bloom.

Tips for Formulators
When blending with Geranium, a little goes a long way. Best used as a supporting middle note, build up slowly to ensure Geranium won’t dominate your formula.
Aromatherapy: Geranium’s uplifting, cooling aroma is popular in invigorating diffuser blends, clarifying room sprays, roll-ons, chest and belly rubs, women’s blends, and massage oils for muscles and joints. Chameleon-like Geranium can be more peaceful when paired with Lavender, Chamomile, or Ylang Ylang, or can become more enlivening when paired with Lemon, Black Pepper, or Ginger.
Cosmetics: Prized for its astringent and balancing effects in skincare, Geranium is ideal in preparations for oily, combination and congested skin, revitalizing facial serums for mature skin, scalp and hair formulations, after-shaves, bath oils, body scrubs and cleansers, outdoor sprays, and foot and leg lotions.
Perfume, Soaps, and Candles: As a middle note, Geranium brings volume and freshness to floral and green compositions, herbaceous colognes, and fruity accords, blending well with citrus, spices, woods, and resins. It’s used as an extender for Rose, or as a Rose substitute, and is a classic in fougères along with Oakmoss, Tonka Bean, Vetiver, Patchouli, Lavender, and Bergamot.
