Product Overview

Our Cannabis (Hemp) essential oil from Italy has a strongly herbaceous, earthy, effervescent green aroma with a slightly bitter high note and a clean herbal body note. It is increasingly being used in natural perfumery for its unique and very tenacious odor character and its long herbaceous drydown. While there is limited information regarding its use in perfumery, there is evidence in perfume blogs as well as the industry that the pronounced aroma of Cannabis tends to be the dominant note in the compositions in which it is used, especially into the drydown.

Those who may be hesitant to use steam distilled Cannabis (Hemp) essential oil should know that CBD (cannabidiol) and THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol) are considered non-volatiles and do not appear in the essential oil.[1] To verify, our in-house GC/MS analysis found no THC or CBD present in our current lot. The peculiar odor of Cannabis is not generated by these cannabinoids of low volatility, but from over one hundred terpenoid compounds that are thought to interact synergistically. Even in low concentrations, many of these terpenoids, such as citronellol and α-terpineol, are beneficial in aromatherapy applications. Franchomme and Pénoël note that Cannabis essential oil has no known contraindications.[2]

For those who wish to know botanical specifics, this French variety, “Futura 75”, is a monoecious plant that bears both male and female flowers and reaches a height of 2-3 meters.[3]

With so much to say about this plant - the molecules that compose it, and its legends and lore - we'll leave it to you to discover the magic Cannabis essential oil can add to your creations. In our 'May Blend Well With' section near the bottom of this page, we offer the oils we think will harmonize with Cannabis essential oil.

PLEASE NOTE: This oil is 100% pure and natural and appropriate for use in Aromatherapy and Natural Perfumery per our website and Certificate of Analysis (COA).

Wow

Rating

Do yourself a favor.... blend this with the best rose you can get your hot little hands on. Holy WOW. Adds a depth and a dirt to rose that is just pure heaven. I used a few drops of this in a blend of Moroccan rose and sandalwood (NC) and it is absolutely killer. I wasn't quite sure how to use it until I allowed my nose to sample the two vials next to each other... and it's perfect. Floral, heady, incense, smoke.

Great top note, at a price

Rating

Four stars for what it is, a super top note. While quite distinct and recalls my college days, I found that the characteristic smell of cannabis in this particular oil is an ultra-short top note, even moreso than the citruses. While some darker shades do extend into the mids, after two minutes you are no longer wearing what anyone would term a cannabis-based fragrance. This is especially true if combined with other green notes such as galbanum and tomato leaf, which can easily overwhelm it. But it doesn’t stand on its own, either, and that’s a problem. I cranked up the concentration to 8% (undiluted) in a green EdP concentrate I’m working on, and it was still gone within minutes even though I attempted to extend the cannabis further into the drydown. A few years ago I experimented with cannabis from a different supplier, and it completely overwhelmed the blends, which is what I was expecting here. In fairness, that other hemp may have been psychoactive (tincture?). Blends well (at high concentration) with tangerine eo, pink/black peppers, frank, elemi, choya loban/birch tar/lap sou tea, cistus abs, cedars, sandalwood, sweet Thai oud, ambrette seed. Note that this oil will cloud your blends (waxes), and I’m afraid that after freezing/filtering the characteristic scent will be deposited onto the filter paper vs remaining in the blend. Haven’t gotten that far yet, because at 8% (or higher) the cost of this in a commercially produced fragrance is prohibitive, so it’s unlikely I’ll ever find to time to test it further...but you never know.

I Don't Know, Cann I?

Rating

This blew my mind upon seeing it even exists, even further when I had it in my hands and smelled it. The typical cannabis aroma remains, but is a subtler back-note, offering up its herbaceousness and spice up to the front. There is something like a cross between dill, black pepper, and pine to the scent. I very much look forward to experimenting with this oil for both its aromatic and purported medicinal value! Glad I took the leap and tried this one out.
